As the wind did not play ball yesterday, I wanted to sail out to see the
last days racing in the Firefly National Championship where 62 boats were
racing off Felixstowe but we did not waste the day as Mag and I had a
lovely bike ride around Felixstowe including a picnic by the lovely River
Orwell near Levington I was keen to get out today to make the most of the
wall-to-wall sunshine with a good 15/20 knot breeze from the SW. The wind
was picking up nicely and as it was a nice day at the weekend, I wanted to
get down early to make sure I could park in Squiz Lane at The Manor end in
Felixstowe especially as campervans have discovered the spot! Mag came down
so she could have her daily walk and I parked easily despite there being 3
campervans there, Mag set off for home at 9.15 and there looked enough wind
for the fin although it was a fraction off at this point. I soon had my F2
Ride 282 at 115 lt. on the beach and rigged my favourite sail the
Tushingham Storm 6.5 the biggest sail I fin with these days. I launched
around 10, I had to wobble off the beach as there was a wind shadow close
to the shore and to be honest it was only marginal finning conditions and I
would probably been better off on the foil to start with, but I stuck with
the fin for an hour and a half having some good long runs out, it did get
really lumpy out to sea but there was a nice smooth section just short of
Wadgate Post. I did have a little floundering when the wind dropped but it
was good fun none the less. I came ashore for a drink and snack and decided
to give the foil a try as I already had it set up on the beach and was soon
flying downwind in a fairly big sea passing several yachts out enjoying
some challenging sailing conditions! I passed a winger by the new Ferris
wheel and made it as far as Jacobs Ladder but with the wind increasing and
the sea getting larger, I decided to head back and had a really nice beat.
I then had a few nice long runs in front of The Manor but the wind was now
well over 20 knots and approaching high water so I decided to call it a day
after another hour and a half covering 60km for the session in the sun!
Pack up and home for a well deserved cuppa and some of Mags freshly made
cheese muffins followed by some chocolate cake, we know how to live:)
